Salvador Historical Tour
Our Salvador Historical Tour in Bahia Brazil is highlighted by an engaging journey through cobblestone streets to white sandy beaches. Salvador is an oasis of culture that offers you a wide range of opportunities to explore. Salvador da Bahia was the first capital of Brazil and remained so for over 200 years. This city has the most African influence anywhere in the world, outside the African continent. Therefore, our Salvador Historical City Tour has a unique Afro-Brazilian flavor.
Understandably, the main destination and focal point of this tour will be the Pelourinho District, the most important historical center of colonial architecture in Latin America. Pelourinho has the largest collection of Baroque colonial architecture in Latin America, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We’ve expanded this excursion to include a delightful group lunch in Pelourinho and a special visit to the Afro-Brazilian museum. Our Salvador Historical Tour traces the first steps of African slaves when they arrived in Salvador aboard slaves ships from West Africa.
You'll visit the first slave market in Brazil; the first African Church in the Americas, built in 1704 - dine at restaurants and shop at art galleries/souvenir stores in the Pelourinho district owned by black Afro-Brazilian entrepreneurs who are direct decedents of African slaves who were once bought and sold in the Pelourinho. Pelourinho, which means ‘whipping stick’ in Portuguese, was the first place where slaves were auctioned off to slave traders upon arrival in Salvador.
Additionally, we offer more intimate excursions like a half-day cooking class in Salvador's historic district; discover the secrets of cooking some of Brazil’s most popular, homegrown, foods born out of slavery like Moqueca (moo-kek-a) or Feijoada. Needless to say, there is no better place to learn how to prepare authentic Afro-Brazilian foods than Salvador Bahia the Soul of Brazil. Bahia’s strong sense of cultural identity, with African, Native Brazilian and European influences, has made Bahia a mystical land with a rich folk culture. Yes, Salvador Bahia Brazil is truly an oasis of culture!
Our experienced (licensed) tour guides are always exploring and reexamining the cultural contributions of ‘Mother Africa’ on daily life in Bahia state past and present. We strive to keep this exclusive excursion fresh in its appeal and presentation.
This tour includes lunch an International Buffet which features local Bahian delicacies. You'll be treated to a delicious lunch buffet at our partner restaurant located in the historic Pelourinho district. At this informal affair you can get a taste of the popular dish feijão that is essentially a flavorful stew of beans with beef and pork, its name derives from the Portuguese word feijão, meaning 'beans'. In its Brazilian incarnation, it is usually prepared with black beans, although white, pinto and red are also acceptable, which are combined in a thick clay pot.
